There are four foundation piles.
Each foundation pile is handed an ace at the start.
A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that could be played on a 9 of diamonds is a 10 of diamonds.
Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.
Splayed downward tableau piles of four cards each. The odd-numbered cards in each pile are dealt face-down, while the even-numbered cards are dealt face-up.
A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and is of the opposing color. As a result, the cards that may be played on the 7 of hearts are the 6 of spades or the 6 of clubs.
Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.
Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.
