Malmaison Solitaire is Thomas Warfield's three-deck entry in the Thieves family: twelve foundations, twelve tableau piles of five cards each, and the freedom to move a same-suit run as a group instead of one card at a time. It's a tough game, with just a 10% chance of winning, and getting there takes real skill along with a fair bit of luck.

How to play Malmaison Solitaire

Layout:

12 foundation piles: Build up in suit from Ace to King.

12 tableau piles: Build down in suit. Runs of same-suit cards can be moved together. Any card can fill a space. At the start of the game, each pile is given five cards.

Stock: Click to turn over one card at a time to the waste pile. There are no redeals.

Waste: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are twelve foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 7 of clubs is an 8 of clubs. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Twelve tableau piles hold five cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 10 of diamonds is a 9 of diamonds.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

If all cards are of the same suit, groups of cards in succession from high to low may be moved from one tableau column to another.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile, and the remaining cards make up the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste pile. You only get one pass through the stock.

The top card of the waste pile can be played to the tableau or a foundation.
