Kansas trims Canfield's four-pile tableau to three, so you build in any suit, Rainbow-style, with noticeably less room to maneuver.

Kansas Solitaire takes Rainbow Solitaire's any-suit building rules, a Canfield Solitaire family trait, and trims the tableau from four piles down to three. That one missing pile makes the game noticeably tighter, since you have less room to shuffle cards out of the reserve and stock.

So, would a five-pile version get called Oz?

How to play Kansas Solitaire

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

One foundation gets a random starting card; the other three begin with cards of that same rank.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card. So the only card that can follow a 6 of spades is the 7 of spades.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Reserve:

There's one reserve pile, dealt with thirteen cards at the start. Only the top card is face-up; the rest are face-down. Nothing can be moved into the reserve, but its top card can be played to the tableau or the foundation.

Tableau:

There are three tableau piles of one card each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower than the pile's top card, regardless of suit. So the only card that can follow a jack is a ten of any suit.

Cards not covered by another card are free to move to the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Empty tableau spots are filled immediately from the reserve. Once the reserve runs out, any card can fill a vacant spot.

Sequences of cards in a row, high to low, can move from one tableau pile to another regardless of suit.

Stock and waste:

There's one waste pile; the rest of the cards form the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste. You get a single pass through the stock, with no redeal.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
