Move same-suit runs as one unit and let the reserve auto-fill every empty column, a tough one-deck game that rewards skill over luck. Coyote Game Layout

Coyote Solitaire is a Canfield-style game built directly on Acme, and the name completes the joke: Acme is the mail-order company that supplies the Coyote's gadgets in the Road Runner cartoons. The bones are the same — four aces on the foundations from the start, a thirteen-card reserve, four tableau columns built down in suit, and two passes through the stock.

Coyote loosens Acme's rules in two ways: same-suit sequences may be moved between columns as a single unit, and whenever a tableau column empties, the top card of the reserve slides in automatically.

The game is difficult, but those two mercies make it noticeably friendlier than Acme. Single deck, one shot: it's your reads that decide the outcome here, not the shuffle.

Fans of Acme Solitaire and Canfield Solitaire will recognize plenty here.

The classic Solitaire is where this whole family started, if you want to go back to basics.

How to play Coyote Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit. The Aces are dealt here at the start of the game.

4 tableau piles: Build down in the same suit. Same-suit sequences may be moved as a group. Spaces are automatically filled from the reserve; once the reserve is empty, any card may fill them. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt one card.

Reserve: The top card is always available for play on the tableau or the foundations. 13 cards are dealt here at the start of the game.

Stock: Click to flip over 1 card at a time. There is one redeal.

Waste: Top card is always accessible for play on the tableau or foundations.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Each foundation pile is handed an ace at the start.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of hearts is a 9 of hearts.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Reserve:

There is one reserve pile, which originally contains thirteen cards. The top card is dealt face-up, while the remaining cards are dealt face-down. No cards may be moved into the reserve. The reserve's top card may be played to the tableau or the foundation, and it automatically fills any tableau column that empties.

Tableau:

Four tableau piles of one card each, built downward. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of hearts is a 7 of hearts.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

A descending same-suit sequence may be moved from one tableau pile to another as a single unit.

Empty tableau spots are instantly filled with the top card of the reserve. If the reserve is empty, any card can occupy any vacant place in the tableau.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile, and the remaining cards make up the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste. You get two passes through the stock in total.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
