Seven by Four keeps FreeCell's four cells but drops a tableau column, so every card deals face-up and the win rate dips noticeably below the original. Seven by Four Game Layout

Seven by Four Solitaire is a tighter, more demanding take on FreeCell. It keeps the four free cells that give the family its name but deals the deck across only seven tableau columns instead of the usual eight, so the very first pile you touch already carries an extra card to untangle. That single missing column removes a surprising amount of breathing room, and careful planning matters far more than in a standard game.

The name spells out the whole layout: seven tableau piles and four free cells. Every card is dealt face-up, there is no stock to fall back on, and nothing is hidden. That makes the game entirely open information, so a lost deal is almost always a lost battle of planning rather than bad luck. Seasoned FreeCell players will feel at home immediately but should expect the win rate to dip noticeably.

Because so many of these positions are solvable with perfect play, the real challenge is spotting the order in which to empty and refill your cells before you commit. Treat the four cells as short-term parking, keep at least one open whenever you can, and you will clear most deals with a little practice.

How to play Seven by Four Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up in each suit from Ace to King. A card is sent to a foundation automatically when it can only be played there.

4 free cells: Each cell holds a single card of any rank or suit. Use them as temporary storage to shuffle cards between the tableau columns.

7 tableau piles: Build down in alternating colors. The whole deck is dealt face-up across these seven columns at the start of the game, and there is no stock or waste.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles, one for each suit.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on the 8 of spades is the 9 of spades. Each pile runs from Ace up to King.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Seven tableau piles hold the entire deck, each one dealt face-up from the start.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the only cards that fit on the 8 of spades are the 7 of hearts and 7 of diamonds.

Any card that is not covered is free to be played onto the foundation, onto another tableau pile, or into a free cell. A sequence of cards may be moved together only as far as your open free cells and empty columns allow, so keeping cells free is the key to shifting longer runs.

Empty tableau columns may be filled with any card or a valid sequence, giving you room to reorganize once a column is cleared.
