Juvenile Solitaire is a two-deck member of the "fourteens" family of adding-and-discarding patiences, the same idea behind Fourteen Out Solitaire. Every card on the table is fair game the moment it is uncovered, and your only tool is arithmetic: find two exposed cards whose ranks add up to fourteen and send the pair away together.

With two decks in play there are 104 cards spread across seventeen piles — one deep pile of eight and sixteen shorter piles of six — which works out to fifty-two pairs to clear. Because a King only ever pairs with an Ace, a Queen with a 2, a Jack with a 3, and so on down to the lone 7-and-7, every rank has a fixed partner. The whole puzzle is really about timing: keeping the right partners exposed at the same moment so that no card is left stranded beneath something it can never pair with.

The two-deck size makes Juvenile far more forgiving than single-deck fourteens games, since each rank appears eight times and there are plenty of ways to arrange a match. The danger is tunnel vision — clearing an easy pair that happens to bury a card you needed. Scan every pile before you commit, keep the tall pile of eight moving so it does not lock up, and you will find a very high share of deals come out.

How to play Juvenile Solitaire

Layout:

17 tableau piles: The top card of each pile is available. Remove any two exposed cards whose ranks add up to fourteen — a King with an Ace, a Queen with a 2, an 8 with a 6, and so on. Pick up one card and drop it on its partner to send the pair away. At the start of the game, one pile is dealt eight cards and the other sixteen piles are dealt six cards each, all face-up.

Foundation pile: The single foundation pile is where paired cards are removed from play.

Foundation:

There is just one foundation pile on which deleted cards are arranged.

Tableau:

There are seventeen tableau piles, played from two decks: one pile of eight cards and sixteen piles of six cards. Every card is dealt face-up.

On the tableau, no building is permitted.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are playable.

The tableau's empty spaces may not be filled.

The following cards couple to 14: King-Ace, Queen-2, Jack-3, 10-4, 9-5, 8-6, 7-7.
