How to play Imperial Guards Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

8 tableau piles: Alternate color build down. If a group of cards is in sequence down by alternate colors, they can be moved. Any card or lawful collection of cards can be used to fill empty piles. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt one card face-up.

Stock: By clicking, the Stockdeals one card to each tableau pile. There are no redeals.

Reserve: Temporary storage for a card or sequence of cards, available only when the stock is depleted. On the foundations or tableau, a card or sequence is available for play.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a 6 of clubs is a 7 of clubs. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

Cards may be removed from the foundation.

Tableau:

Splayed downhill, eight tableau piles of one card each. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and is of the opposing color. As a result, the cards that may be played on a 4 of hearts would be three of spades or three of clubs.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

If the cards are alternately red and black, groups of cards in succession from high to low can be shifted from one tableau column to another.

Stock:

The stock is made up of leftover cards.

When you click on the stock, a card is dealt to the top of each tableau pile.

A pocket will form when the deck is depleted. This pocket can temporarily hold a single card or a stack of cards. This is known as "waiving." If there is a stack of cards in the pocket, you cannot pull individual cards out. Only the entire sequence may be deleted.

Notes:

Players may use the vacant area underneath the stockpile once all of the cards in the stockpile have been played (the reserve). That spot can be occupied by any single card or legal sequence of cards. Only one card or sequence of this type may be played to the reserve.
