Thomas Warfield's version of a nineteenth-century game was documented in George A. Bonaventure's 1932 collection of solitaire games. It is a two-deck game in which 52 cards are dealt to the tableau and another 52 are dealt to the reserve. Card suits are entirely ignored. The game is medium in difficulty, with a 65% chance of winning. It is played with two decks, and your odds of victory are primarily determined by your talent.

The game is comparable to Beleaguered Castle and other solitaire games.

If you enjoy Castle of Indolence, you should play Spider Solitaire, a traditional solitaire card game.

How to play Castle of Indolence

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King regardless of suit.

8 tableau piles: Build down in any suit. Only the top card of each pile is playable. Any available card may be used to fill any open space. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt 6 cards face-up.

4 reserve piles: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau. At the start of the game, each pile is given 13 cards.

Foundation:

There are two foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be placed onto a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of any suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a 4 is a 5. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Reserve:

There are four reserves, each with thirteen cards at first. The top card in each pile is dealt face-up, while the remaining cards are dealt face-down. There are no cards that can be moved into the reserves. Each reserve's top card can be played to the tableau or the foundation.

Tableau:

Splayed downhill, eight tableau piles of thirteen cards each. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and of any suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a 5 is a 4.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

Technically, only one card may be moved at a time, but because super moves are allowed, we will allow you to move sequences when there are enough vacant tableau columns to achieve the same result with a series of single card movements.
