How to play Midshipman

Layout:

8 foundation piles (across the top) - build up from Ace to King in suit.

There are 9 tableau piles (below the foundations). Build down in any suit other than the same. Each pile's top card may only be moved. Any card can fill a space. At the start of the game, each pile is given four cards, two face down and two face up.

Stock (top left) - click to turn over 1 card at a time to the garbage pile. There are no redeals.

Waste (next to stock) - the top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a J of spades is a Q of spades. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Tableau:

Splayed downhill, nine tableau piles of four cards each. The top two cards in each pile are dealt face down, while the remaining cards are dealt face up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and is of a different suit. As a result, the cards that might be played on the 5 of diamonds are 4 of spades, 4 of hearts, or 4 of clubs.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

Technically, only one card may be moved at a time, however enabling supermoves allows you to move sequences when there are enough vacant tableau columns to achieve the same result with a sequence of single card moves.

Stock and waste:

There is one garbage pile and the remaining cards comprise the stock.

When you click on the stock, one card from the stock is dealt to the garbage. There can only be one trip through the stock.

The top card of the trash can be played to the tableau or foundation.
