Kingsley Solitaire flips Klondike on its head: the foundations build down from King to Ace, and the tableau builds up by alternating color. The rules aren't really any harder, but if your instincts are trained on regular Klondike, expect some early stumbles. It's difficult, with about a 1% chance of winning, and it's played with a single deck, where skill and luck both matter.

Spike Solitaire puts its own spin on Klondike too, dealing to three waste piles instead of flipping the foundations, if you'd like to compare notes.

Circle back to the classic Solitaire if you want your foundations climbing the normal direction again.

How to play Kingsley Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build down from King to Ace in the same suit.

7 tableau piles: Build up 7 tableau piles by alternating color. Groups of cards in sequence can move together the same way. Fill empty slots with an Ace, or with a sequence that has an Ace at the bottom. To begin the game, one card is dealt to the first pile, two cards to the second, and so on. Only the top card is shown.

Stock: Click to flip over 1 card at a time. There are no redeals.

Waste: Top card available for play on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card. So the only card that can follow a 9 of diamonds is the 8 of diamonds.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

There are seven tableau piles, with one card in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and so on. Only the top card in each pile is dealt face-up; the rest are face-down.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank higher and the opposite color of the pile's top card. So the cards that can follow a 6 of hearts are the 7 of spades or the 7 of clubs.

Cards not covered by another card are free to move to the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Only Aces can fill an empty tableau slot.

If a group of cards in sequence is alternating red and black, you can move it as a unit from one tableau pile to another.

Stock and waste:

There's one waste pile; the rest of the cards form the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste. You get a single pass through the stock, with no redeal.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
