Start every foundation on a Jack and climb to King, wrap to Ace, then finish on Ten, with four free cells and one pass through the stock. Jacks in the Box Game Layout

Jacks in the Box Solitaire takes the two-deck, off-rank family of games and makes the humble Jack its hero. Every foundation is seeded with a Jack before you touch a card, and the whole deck climbs upward from there — Jack to Queen to King, then wrapping around through Ace and the pips before finishing on the Ten. The result is a long, orderly climb that rewards patience over guesswork.

The game belongs to the same lineage as Deuces Solitaire and Busy Aces Solitaire, where a single low rank is chosen as the base and all eight foundations grow in suit. Four free cells give you room to breathe, letting you park an awkward card while you untangle the tableau below.

You get one pass through the stock and nothing more, so every card that reaches the waste is a small decision that cannot be undone by a redeal. Skilled players learn to hold their cells in reserve and empty the tableau columns before the stock runs dry.

How to play Jacks in the Box Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: The eight Jacks are dealt here at the start. Build each pile up in the same suit, wrapping from King to Ace and on to the Ten, until every card is home.

6 tableau piles: Build down in the same suit. Only the top card of each pile may be moved, and one card is dealt to each pile at the start.

4 free cells: Each cell holds a single card of any rank or suit as temporary storage.

Stock: Click to flip cards one at a time to the waste. There are no redeals.

Waste: The top card of the waste is playable.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles, one for each suit across both decks.

Every foundation begins with a Jack, since the Jack is the low rank of this game.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, wrapping from King to Ace and continuing up to the Ten, so the only card that fits on a King of spades is an Ace of spades.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Six tableau piles of one card each, every card dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of spades is a 7 of spades.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card can be played onto a foundation, a free cell, or another tableau pile. Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile and the remaining cards make up the stock.

When you click on the stock, one card from the stock is dealt to the waste. There is only one pass through the stock.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau, a free cell, or a foundation.
