Eight by Eight Solitaire swaps the usual Klondike layout for an outsized grid: eight foundations to fill and eight tableau piles, each dealt eight cards face-up from two full decks. You build down regardless of suit, and whole sequences can be dragged from pile to pile no matter how the suits fall. It's a forgiving setup, with a 95% chance of winning most deals.

Rows of Four Solitaire and Congress Solitaire use that same eight-foundation, eight-pile, two-deck setup if you want more like it. Or scale back down with original Solitaire, the classic single-deck game.

How to play Eight by Eight Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

8 tableau piles: Build down regardless of suit. Sequenced cards can be moved as a group no matter what suits are involved. Empty spots can't be filled. Each pile starts with 8 cards, all dealt face-up.

Stock: Click to deal three cards to the waste on the first pass, two on the second, and one on the third. There are two redeals.

Waste: The top card can be played to the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

Any ace can be placed on an empty foundation pile.

A card can go on a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher than the pile's top card and the same suit. So the only card that fits on a 7 of hearts is an 8 of hearts. No pile can hold more than 13 cards.

The top card of a foundation can move back into play if another pile will take it.

Tableau:

Eight tableau piles of eight cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can go on a tableau pile if it's one rank lower than the pile's top card, regardless of suit. So a 3 of any suit can be played on a 4.

Any card not covered by another is free to move to the foundation or another tableau pile.

Empty tableau spots can't be filled by anything, a single card or a group.

Sequenced cards, regardless of suit, can be moved from one tableau pile to another as a group.

Stock and waste:

There's one waste pile; the rest of the cards make up the stock.

Click the stock to deal three cards to the waste. You get three passes through the stock in total, and each pass deals fewer cards at a time: three on the first, two on the second, one on the last. If the stock runs short near the end of a pass, whatever cards are left get dealt. Once a pass ends, the waste pile turns back into the stock for the next one.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
