Box Kite Solitaire splits its eight foundations down the middle: four build up from Ace to King, and four build down from King to Ace. The twelve tableau piles are just as flexible, climbing or descending regardless of suit, and wrapping past King back to Ace or Ace up to King. It's a tough one, played with two decks and just a 7% chance of winning, where skill and luck both matter.

The classic Solitaire is always there if you want something more straightforward.

How to play Box Kite Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: The top four build down in suit from King to Ace, and the bottom four build up in suit from Ace to King. An Ace and a King of each suit are dealt here at the start of the game.

12 tableau piles: Build up or down regardless of suit, wrapping as needed from Ace to King or King to Ace. The top card can move to the foundations or another tableau pile. Only one card can be moved at a time. Empty piles don't get filled. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt 8 cards, with only the top card turned face up.

Foundation:

There are two sets of foundation piles.

Foundation A: Four piles, each starting with an ace. A card can be added to a Foundation A pile if it's one rank higher than the pile's top card and the same suit. So the only card that can follow a 6 of hearts is the 7 of hearts. Each pile holds up to 13 cards.

Foundation B: Four piles, each starting with a king. A card can be added to a Foundation B pile if it's one rank lower than the pile's top card and the same suit. So the only card that can follow a 5 of diamonds is the 4 of diamonds. Each pile holds up to 13 cards.

The top card of a foundation pile can be moved back into play if another pile will take it.

Tableau:

Twelve tableau piles, each dealt eight cards. Only the top card starts face up; the rest are dealt face down.

A card can be added to a tableau pile if it's one rank higher or lower than the pile's top card, regardless of suit. So the only cards that can follow a Jack are a 10 or a Queen of any suit, and you can also play a King straight onto an Ace.

Any card not covered by another card is free to move to a foundation or any non-empty tableau pile.

Empty tableau spaces can't be filled.

Only one card can move at a time, there's no moving sequences.
