Applegate Solitaire plays a lot like Spider Solitaire and Yukon Solitaire: you build runs on the tableau in the same suit, wrapping from Ace around to King whenever you need to. It might even be an early ancestor of Scorpion Solitaire. The game is tough, with a 12% chance of winning, and since it's played with a single deck, skill counts for a lot more than luck.

How to play Applegate Solitaire

Layout:

7 tableau piles: Build down in the same suit, wrapping from Ace to King when you need to. Cards already in sequence can be moved together as a group. Empty piles can only be filled with a King, or a group of cards led by a King. Each pile starts with 7 cards: the first pile is dealt entirely face-up, and the other six get 2 face-down cards and 5 face-up.

3 reserve cards: All three are playable to the tableau. Once you've played them, they can't be replaced.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Single cards are never allowed onto the foundation. Only once you've built a complete run on the tableau, all thirteen cards in order from Ace to King, can you move it up as a whole.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Reserve:

The remaining cards form a single reserve pile.

Every card in the reserve is available for tableau play.

Tableau:

Seven tableau piles of 7 cards each are dealt: the first pile entirely face-up, and the other six with their first 2 cards face-down and the remaining 5 face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card. So the only card that can go on a 10 of diamonds is a 9 of diamonds. Because the suit wraps around, you can also play a King on an Ace.

A tableau card that isn't covered by another card is free to move to any other tableau pile where it fits.

Only Kings may fill an empty tableau spot.

Any face-up card in the tableau, along with everything stacked on top of it, can be moved together to another tableau column where it fits.
