How to play Willow

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

7 tableau piles: Alternate color build down. If groups of cards are in sequence, move them down by alternate color. Fill in the blanks with any lawful card or legal collection of cards. To begin the game, one card is dealt face-up to the first pile, two cards to the second pile, and so on.

4 fans: The top card can be played on the foundations, tableau, or other fans. Create cards of the same rank. No gaps may be filled. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt 6 cards face-up.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that could be played on a 4 of hearts is a 5 of hearts.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Fan:

Splayed downward, four fan piles of six cards each. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a fan-pile if it is of equal rank as the pile's previous top card and of any suit. As a result, any jack of any suit might be played on a jack.

Cards on the fan that are not covered by another card can be played onto the foundation, any tableau pile, or any non-empty fan pile.

It is possible that empty spots in the fan will not be filled.

Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.

Tableau:

There are seven tableau piles, with one card in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and so on. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and is of the opposing color. As a result, the cards that may be played on the 7 of hearts are the 6 of spades or the 6 of clubs.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card can be played onto the foundation, any other tableau pile, or any non-empty fan pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

If the cards are alternately red and black, groups of cards in succession from high to low can be shifted from one tableau column to another.
