How to play Whitehead

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

7 tableau piles: Build down by color in 7 tableau piles. If groupings of cards are in sequence, move them down in the same suit. Fill in the blanks with any card or lawful collection of cards. To begin the game, one card is dealt face-up to the first pile, two cards to the second, and so on.

Stock: Click to turn over one card at a time to the garbage. There are no redeals.

Waste: Top card is always accessible for play on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a 6 of diamonds is a 7 of diamonds.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Tableau:

There are seven tableau piles, with one card in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and so on. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower and of the same color as the original top card of the pile. As a result, the cards that might be played on the 10 of clubs are 9 of spades or 9 of clubs.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

If all cards are of the same suit, groups of cards in succession from high to low may be moved from one tableau column to another.

Stock and waste:

There is one garbage pile and the remaining cards comprise the stock.

When you click on the stock, one card from the stock is dealt to the garbage. There can only be one trip through the stock.

The top card of the trash can be played to the tableau or foundation.
