How to play Demons and Thieves

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Construct in suit from the rank of the first card dealt to the first pile, wrapping from King to Ace as needed, until each pile has 13 cards.

9 tableau piles: Build the first four tableau piles down by alternate color. In all situations, build the remaining 5down in the same suit, wrapping from Ace to King if necessary. Groups of cards should be moved if they constitute a valid descending order for that pile. Any card or legal collection of cards can fill a slot. At the start of the game, one card is dealt to each of the four piles on the left, and eight cards are handed to each of the remaining five piles.

Stock: Click to turn over 1 card at a time to the garbage. There are two redeals.

Waste: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Reserve: The top card can be played on the foundations or the tableau. 13 cards are dealt here at the start of the game.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

A foundation pile will be given a card at random. This is the starting card. Begin the remainder of the piles with cards of the same rank.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that could be played on a 7 of clubs is an 8 of clubs. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Reserve:

There is one reserve deck, which originally contains thirteen cards. The top card in the pile is dealt face-up, while the remaining cards are dealt face-down. There are no cards that may be moved into the reserve. The top card of the reserve can be played to the left, right, or foundation tableau.

Stock and waste:

There is one garbage pile and the remaining cards comprise the stock.

When you click on the stock, one card from the stock is dealt to the garbage. There are three trips through the stock allowed.

The top card of the trash can be played to the left tableau, right tableau, or foundation.
