Thirty Six Solitaire takes its name from the tableau: a six-by-six grid holding thirty-six cards, every one of them face-up from the first deal. The other sixteen cards sit in the stock. Build down regardless of suit or color, and you can drop any card into an empty column, which makes this a looser, faster game than Klondike.

How to play Thirty Six Solitaire

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace on a foundation may be moved back to an empty tableau pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of hearts is a 9 of hearts.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Six tableau piles of six cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower than the pile's current top card, regardless of suit, so any three fits on a four.

Cards on the tableau that aren't covered by another card are free to move to the foundation or another tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty tableau slot.

Groups of cards in sequence from high to low can move together from one tableau pile to another, regardless of suit.

Stock and waste:

There's one waste pile, and the rest of the cards make up the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste. You get a single pass through the stock, no redeals.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
