Strata Solitaire deals a stripped double deck, no twos through sixes, straight across eight tableau columns of eight cards each, so every column is full from the first move and there's no stock to draw from. Foundations don't start on the ace here: each pile begins on a seven and climbs through the king before wrapping around to the ace to finish. When you run out of useful moves, two redeals gather what's left on the tableau and reshuffle it back across the columns. It's a 30% chance of winning, and your odds come down to skill and luck.

Spider Solitaire is another traditional card game worth trying if you like managing a wide tableau.

The original Solitaire is a solid change of pace from Strata's odd foundations.

How to play Strata Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up in suit, starting on a seven and climbing through the king, then wrapping around to the ace to finish each pile.

8 tableau piles: Alternate color build down. Only one card can be moved at a time. Any available card may fill a spot. At the start of the game, each pile is given 8 cards.

Stock: There are two redeals. Click the stock to redeal: the cards remaining on the tableau are gathered up and reshuffled back across the columns.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles, each one starting on a seven.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, wrapping from king to ace to complete the pile, so the only card that fits on a J of hearts is a Q of hearts. There can be no more than 8 cards in a pile.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Eight tableau piles of eight cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the only cards that fit on the J of spades are the 10 of hearts and 10 of diamonds.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau. Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.
