Two Sir Tommy games in one: Aces climb up while Kings count down, both alternating red and black as they go.

Alternate Solitaire takes Sir Tommy Solitaire and splits its foundations into two teams. Two piles build up from the Aces, alternating red and black as they climb. Two piles build down from the Kings, alternating the same way. Half the deck is climbing while the other half is counting down, so you're really running two Sir Tommy games at once.

Alternate fans can also try the original Solitaire, a popular card game in its own right.

How to play Alternate Solitaire

Foundation:

Foundation piles come in two types.

The Red Foundation

The red foundation is made up of two piles, each dealt an ace to start. A card can be added to a red foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the cards that fit on the Q of spades are the K of hearts and K of diamonds. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

The Black Foundation

The black foundation is also two piles, each dealt a black king to start. A card can be added to a black foundation pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the cards that fit on the 7 of spades are the 6 of hearts and 6 of diamonds. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

Cards cannot be removed from any foundation once they've been placed on it.

Reserve:

There are four reserve piles, all empty at the start.

Any card from the stock can be added to the reserve, regardless of suit or rank, so literally any card can be played on any other card. Cards from other reserve piles cannot be moved to the reserve.

Cards on the reserve that aren't covered by another card can be played onto the foundation.

Any card from the stock may fill an empty reserve slot; cards from other reserve piles cannot.

Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.

Stock:

The stock is made up of leftover cards.

The top card of the stock is always face-up, so you can drag it to the reserve or the foundation whenever you like.
