Take Arizona's layout and make it meaner: alternate colors down the tableau instead of ignoring suit. Still fair though, with a 50% win rate in one skill-driven deck. Phoenix Game Layout

Phoenix Solitaire takes Arizona Solitaire's layout and makes it tougher: instead of building down regardless of suit, you have to alternate colors as you go. It's a medium-difficulty game with a 50% chance of winning, played with a single deck, where skill matters more than luck.

How to play Phoenix Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up in suit order from Ace to King.

6 tableau piles: Build down, alternating colors. Cards in sequence by alternating color can be moved as a group. Any card can fill an empty space. Each pile starts with 6 cards.

Reserve: The 16 leftover cards form a single pile, all dealt face-up. Only the top card can be played, to the foundation or tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile if it's one rank higher than the pile's top card and the same suit, so the only card that can land on a 9 of clubs is the 10 of clubs.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Reserve:

The 16 cards left over after the tableau is dealt form a single reserve pile, all face-up.

Only the top card of the reserve can be played, to the tableau or foundation.

Tableau:

Six tableau piles of six cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile if it's one rank lower than the pile's top card and of the opposite color, so the cards you can play on a 6 of clubs are the 5 of hearts or 5 of diamonds.

Any uncovered tableau card is free to move to the foundation or another tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

You can move a whole group of cards in sequence from one tableau pile to another, as long as the colors alternate.
