Great Triangle deals three decks into a triangular staircase of one to thirteen cards, then dares you to build twelve suits with only one pass through the stock. Great Triangle Game Layout

Great Triangle Solitaire is a demanding three-deck take on Klondike, credited to prolific designer Thomas Warfield. Its name comes from the deal: the thirteen tableau piles are laid out in a staircase, the first holding a single card and each pile after it holding one more, so the last pile is thirteen cards deep and the whole shape forms a broad triangle.

With 156 cards spread across a dozen foundations, the game asks you to build long alternating-color runs while feeding twelve suited piles all the way from Ace to King. Only one pass through the stock is allowed and there is no redeal, so every waste card counts. It plays with three decks, and your odds of victory lean heavily on careful planning rather than luck.

Take the triangular-staircase idea in different directions with Eternal Triangle Solitaire or Triple Klondike Solitaire.

You already know Solitaire as the classic; it's still there whenever you want a simpler round.

How to play Great Triangle Solitaire

Layout:

12 foundation piles: Build up in the same suit from Ace to King. Eligible cards are moved to the foundations automatically.

13 tableau piles: Dealt as a triangle of 1, 2, 3, up to 13 cards, every card face-up. Build down in alternating colors. Empty piles may be filled with any available card.

Stock: Click to turn cards over one at a time to the waste. There is only one pass, with no redeals.

Waste: The top card of the waste is playable.

Foundation:

There are twelve foundation piles, enough to hold all Aces through Kings across three decks.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of spades is a 9 of spades. Each pile is complete once it reaches the King.

Cards are sent to the foundations automatically when they are eligible, and cards cannot be taken back once they have been placed.

Tableau:

Thirteen tableau piles rise in a staircase from one card to thirteen cards. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the only cards that fit on an 8 of spades are the 7 of hearts and 7 of diamonds.

Packed sequences of alternating colors may be moved together as a unit. Any available card may be placed onto an empty tableau pile.

Stock and waste:

The remaining cards after the deal make up the stock, with one waste pile beside it.

When you click on the stock, one card is dealt to the waste. There's only one pass through the stock, and there are no redeals.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or the foundations.
