Two decks, eight five-card piles, and one rule that never bends: only single cards move, so patience wins over speed.

Forty and Eight Solitaire deals two decks across eight tableau piles of five cards each, forty cards total, with eight foundations to fill by suit. Only one card moves at a time, and there's no way to shift a run of cards as a group. Progress can stall for a long stretch and then the whole board clicks into place at once, which is half the fun.

How to play Forty and Eight Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

8 tableau piles: Build down by suit. Only one card moves at a time, and any card can fill an empty spot. Each pile starts with 5 cards, all face-up.

Stock: Click to deal one card at a time to the waste. One redeal is allowed.

Waste: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles, all empty at the start.

Any ace can start a foundation pile — the piles aren't tied to a particular suit.

A card joins a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher than the pile's current top card and matches its suit. So the only card that can land on a 9 of diamonds is a 10 of diamonds. Each pile tops out at 13 cards.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Eight tableau piles hold five cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower than the pile's current top card and shares its suit. So the only card that can land on a 7 of hearts is a 6 of hearts.

Any tableau card left uncovered is free to move to a foundation or another tableau pile. Any card can fill an empty tableau spot.

You can only move one card at a time. There's no way to shift a run of cards together, super-moves or otherwise.

Stock and waste:

There's one waste pile; the rest of the deck makes up the stock.

Click the stock and one card moves to the waste. You get two passes through the stock in total.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or a foundation.
