Play a friskier Sir Tommy: build all four tableau piles down regardless of suit, dig back what you buried, and chase a 40% win rate that's mostly down to skill. Assembly Game Layout

Assembly Solitaire is a quick member of the Sir Tommy family, the ancient line of patiences in which the foundations climb from Ace to King without any regard for suit. Where Sir Tommy gives you four dead storage piles, Assembly hands you a small working tableau instead: its four piles may be built down regardless of suit, so a badly placed card can often be dug out again rather than being lost for the rest of the game. Moderately hard is about right — you'll clear roughly 40% of deals, and with a single deck in play, the outcome rests on how well you plan your burials, not the shuffle.

That extra freedom comes with a squeeze. Only one card may be moved at a time — sequences never travel together — and with just four columns to absorb forty-eight cards from the stock, space disappears quickly. Emptied piles accept any card, and the game speeds you along by sending every playable card to the foundations automatically, so the real craft lies in deciding what to bury and what to keep within reach.

For more of that same rank-climbing feeling, head to Sir Tommy Solitaire or Auld Lang Syne Solitaire next.

If you'd rather build up in suit than dig through a burial pile, standard Solitaire is the more forgiving option.

How to play Assembly Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up regardless of suit from Ace to King. Cards that can be played to the foundations are moved there automatically.

4 tableau piles: Build down regardless of suit. Only the top card of each pile may be moved. Any card can fill an empty space. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt one card face-up.

Stock: Click to turn over cards one at a time to the waste. There are no redeals.

Waste: The top card is available for play.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any Ace may be moved to an empty foundation pile. A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher than the pile's current top card, regardless of suit, so the only cards that fit on an 8 of spades are the four 9s. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

Playable cards are sent to the foundations automatically, and the top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Four tableau piles, each dealt one card face-up.

A card from the waste or another tableau pile can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower than the pile's current top card, regardless of suit, so the only cards that fit on an 8 of spades are the four 7s.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundations or any other tableau pile. Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile, and the remaining 48 cards make up the stock.

When you click on the stock, one card is dealt to the waste. There is only one pass through the stock.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or the foundations.
