How to play Haystack

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

Reserve: Card storage places. The top card is the only one that may be played. There is an 8-card limit. Any card in the deck can be transferred to the reserve. At the start of the game, you are handed 8 cards.

9 tableau piles: Alternate color build down. Only one card can be moved at a time. Fill in the blanks with any card. At the start of the game, 8 cards are dealt face-up to the first, second, eighth, and ninth piles, 4 cards to the third and seventh piles, and 2 cards to the fourth and sixth piles. The fifth pile is empty.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that could be played on a 7 of diamonds is an 8 of diamonds.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Reserve:

Splayed downward reserve pile of eight cards Every card is dealt face-up.

Cards of any suit or rank may be added to the reserve. In other words, any card may be played on any other card.

Cards in the reserve that are not covered by another card can be played onto the foundation or any tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the reserve.

Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.

Tableau:

Nine tableau piles of cards are placed as follows, where "D" represents a face-down card and "U" represents a face-up card:

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and is of the opposing color. As a result, the cards that may be played on the 9 of diamonds would be the 8 of spades or the 8 of clubs.

Cards not covered by another card on the tableau are eligible for play to the foundation, the reserve pile, or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.
